What a story! 🎨

A leading figure in the 2019 Sudanese revolution, Alaa Salah has become one of the most powerful contemporary symbols of female resistance. An architecture student, she rose to global prominence after an iconic photograph: standing on a car, dressed in a traditional white thobe, she leads revolutionary chants before a crowd. Her image has resonated worldwide as a symbol of courage, freedom, and female resistance. But beyond this photograph, Alaa Salah primarily represents the voice of Sudanese women. For decades, they have fought against violence and restrictions.
Freedoms, forced marriages, political and social oppression. Even today, women in Sudan continue to suffer the consequences of war, forced displacement, and profound inequalities. Combining Alaa Salah's perspective with "Sudanese Beauty" creates a dialogue between past and present. Leopold Carl Müller's painting offers an Orientalist and aesthetic vision of Sudanese women, observed through the eyes of a 19th-century European painter. By incorporating Alaa Salah's gaze, the work shifts: the woman depicted is no longer merely contemplated, she looks back. She reclaims her place, her voice, and her power. The work is then reinterpreted by Justine Coquidé through her collage technique. It features the names of women, both well-known and anonymous, who have fought for decades for their rights and freedom. These are figures who have contributed, each in their own way, to improving the lives of women in Sudan. Through this work, Justine Coquidé connects memory, heritage, and contemporary struggles, reminding us that the fight for women's rights is never truly over. Behind every advance lie further struggles, silenced voices, and women who continue to fight for their freedom. Through the eyes of Alaa Salah, the work no longer looks only to the past; it looks toward the future.
