What a story! 🎨

In 1930, Grant Wood painted American Gothic, in an America reeling from the 1929 stock market crash. In a matter of days, Wall Street collapsed, millions of Americans lost their jobs, banks closed, and Midwestern farmers, like those he depicts, saw their world crumble. Faced with this crisis, the man and woman in the painting embody integrity, hard work, and silent resistance. In this contemporary reinterpretation, Justine Coquidé replaces the original couple with hypersexualized figures: he is shirtless, she is a Playboy pin-up. The brand's logo looms in the background as a new icon. Here, it is no longer the land that is cultivated, but the body, the gaze, the image. Sparrows are kept in the house. In Christianity, the sparrow symbolizes the spiritual value of simple things. The Bible reminds us that no sparrow falls without God seeing it. A sign that every being has value, even the humblest. But today, in this consumer society, work, effort, and modesty are relegated. It is no longer the invisible who count, but the visible, the desirable, the "marketable." Sparrows, like the values of yesteryear, are still there, but caged.
