 The Kiss by Francesco Hayez


 Francesco Hayez's (1791-1882) The Kiss holds great symbolic significance in Italy. Created during a still very prudish era, this highly realistic and sensual gesture heralds a new age, that of Romanticism, in Italian art. Presented to the public in 1859, this painting primarily represents the birth of a nation after a passionate struggle between two wars of independence. Four versions of this work were created, but the fourth remains lost.
