 The Scream by Edward Munch
 But what does this painting represent? An excerpt from Edvard Munch's diary sheds some light on the matter. On January 22, 1892, he wrote these lines:
 “I was walking along a path with two friends—the sun was setting—suddenly the sky turned blood red. I stopped, tired, and leaned against a fence—there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord of the city—my friends continued on, and I stayed there, trembling with anxiety—I felt an infinite scream passing through the universe and tearing through nature.”
 Yes, indeed! Contrary to popular belief, the scream doesn't come from the character but from nature. The character appears frightened and covers their ears to muffle a deafening scream.
