 The Lille Opera House.
 In 1903, a fire destroyed the previous opera house, built on the same site by Michel-Joseph Lequeux in 1785. The city council then decided to launch a competition for the construction of the new building. The winner was the architect Louis Marie Cordonnier, whose inspiration drew from Victor Louis and Charles Garnier, as well as Italian-style theaters. In 1979, the Lille Opera House became affiliated with the Roubaix Northern Ballet and the Tourcoing Opera Workshop. Maria Callas, the iconic Greek opera singer born in 1923 and who died in 1977, is a prominent figure in classical opera.
