What a story! 🎨

"A dream turned into reality is a different dream."

For its 2023-2024 season, the Théâtre du Colisée in Roubaix commissioned Roubaix-based artist Justine Coquidé to create its visual identity. The artist opted for a work that evokes dreams and escapism—a beautiful tribute to this venue that invites audiences to escape through its performances for an evening.

Her inspiration initially stemmed from the name of the theater, "The Colosseum." Indeed, the Colosseum, by definition, was the place of entertainment in Roman times. She then incorporated the codes and references of mythology. The clouds and flowers evoke Olympus. It is Mount Olympus that shelters the happiness of Zeus and his divine family. The gods live there in a secret garden, a summit hidden by clouds. We find the presence of the goddess Artemis at the top of the theater. The goddess represents wild nature, the moon, and the night. Dreams and oneirism are invited into this parallel, and we discover the theater's architecture from a new perspective, like a gentle dream accompanied by the constellations of the zodiac.

Codes and scales are altered by the artist through their unique collage technique. The canary accompanies the invitation to escape. Recognizable by its melodious song, it sets the tone for the impressive lineup of artists featured in this year's new program.

A little anecdote: The canary is a true protective symbol for the region. It used to be common to take canaries into coal mines to detect gas emissions. They were so sensitive that if gas was present, they died almost instantly.

Can you spot it? In the image, the Latin phrase Acta est fabula ("the play is performed") is hidden.

In ancient Roman theatres, it announced the end of the performance and the moment for the audience to leave.

Let yourself be carried away by the Colosseum's program and the artist's visuals, and escape throughout the year!
