What a story! 🎨
Likely inspired by a work by the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles, this statue was found incomplete and in three fragments in 1651 in Arles, France. The very identity of the statue has been the subject of much debate; initially identified as Diana the Huntress, it became known as the goddess Venus. After an initial restoration, the marble statue was exhibited in Arles for over thirty years before being "given" to Louis XIV (at his request) to decorate Versailles. It was on this occasion that the king's sculptor, François Girardon, restored its true identity. He consecrated Venus by placing an apple in the statue's right hand, recalling the Judgment of Paris, and a mirror in its left. Today, Venus is adorned with new 21st-century accessories and jewelry, playfully displaying them. More feminine than ever, Venus reveals a rebellious personality.
