What a story! 🎨




 Hippolyte Flandrin, Jean-Auguste Ingres's favorite pupil, had won the Grand Prix de Rome; when he painted The Young Man, he was completing his fourth year of training at the Villa Medici overlooking Rome. He borrowed from Raphael the softness and precision of line, from Michelangelo the posture and prominent muscles, from Leonardo the hazy, hazy atmosphere, and from Caravaggio the interplay of light and shadow and a certain theatricality in the composition. For after all, what is this young man doing on his rock? The title, Young Nude Man Seated by the Sea, gives us no clue, but rather emphasizes that it is an academic nude. The nude is primarily intended to achieve an ideal of beauty inherited from antiquity. In the 19th century, male nudes symbolized courage and virtue; they were demigods or mortals who had transcended their condition to become heroes. Today the young man's scenery changes; the 16th century brings him the company of a woman with a face as unknown to him as his own.
