THIS IS ART x JONATHAN VANDROMME! 🎨
“In this theme, I explore the concept of ‘Non-Portrait,’ maintaining the same codes and representations as in my previous work. I use a kind of negation, a false cross (just a vertical and a horizontal line) that emerges from the background and obscures the representation of the chosen portrait (most often of artists I admire). As in the majority of my work, I attempt to discover ‘my own color’ by reinterpreting symbols and representations of the sacred. Inspired by Magritte’s work (this is not an apple), and considering that behind one image lies another, that we can never stumble upon a truth of the perceived image, encountering a face or its representation does not grant us immediate access to a truth of being. It is much more than that: a step we must take to access the mysterious and invisible evocation of Being.” To avoid falling into idolatry, I pictorially propose a healthy distance between the love received through a work of art and the love one feels for its creator. By destroying an icon while preserving its iconic forms, by using personification through the title, I make the painting speak, and through its titled voice, the representation announces that it is not what we identify. By not announcing itself, the subject reminds us that despite attaining a state of genius, every being must confront their own finitude.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1983 in a suburb of northern France, Jonathan Vandromme is a self-taught artist who discovered his passion for drawing at a very young age. He gradually broadened his range of expression by exploring different mediums and began painting later in life. At the age of 20, he found in oil painting on canvas the means to fully express his personal experiences, deep intuitions, and emotions. Before that, he had experimented with pastels, graffiti, and traditional trompe-l'œil frescoes. This shift to oil painting marked a decisive turning point in his artistic practice, allowing him to create sensitive and evocative images. Jonathan Vandromme defines himself more as an "image maker." For him, the titles of his works play an essential role: they are not intended to explain the paintings, but rather to establish a resonance between the created image and the intuition behind its conception. Her inspirations often stem from emotions evoked by other art forms, such as cinema, literature, poetry, or music. These influences nourish her work, bringing a particular depth and richness to her creations.
