What a story! 🎨

Campaspe is a figure from antiquity known for being the mistress of Alexander the Great. The story goes that Alexander commissioned his painter Apelles to paint Campaspe's portrait. While painting her, the artist fell in love with her. Moved by this passion, Alexander offered Campaspe to Apelles, believing that the eye of art had perceived a beauty deeper than royal power itself. In his 1896 painting, John William Godward depicts Campaspe standing upright, almost statuesque. Justine Coquidé reinterprets this figure as the Empress, one of the major arcana of the tarot. Campaspe's posture and scepter become the attributes of a sovereign who no longer merely inspires, but asserts her own creative power. The artist adds a tattooed eagle, a symbol of profound intuition, vision, and inner authority. Butterfly wings, meanwhile, evoke ephemeral beauty and metamorphosis, reminding us that all true power is born from change, movement, and rebirth. In this contemporary interpretation, the ancient muse becomes a woman who reigns over her universe.
