What a story! 🎨
Antonio Canova was a Venetian sculptor and painter. His interest in the female nude, often depicted in languid poses, is a constant in his art. Preoccupied with the rendering of flesh and complexion, he readily coated the marble with a thin layer of pinkish wax. He sculpted the female body with a delicate touch, evident in the drapery. With the collage "Marble Femen," Justine Coquidé gives a second, politically engaged life to one of his white marble statues, "The Italian Venus," which can be found in the Palatine Gallery in Florence. Solid as marble yet nonchalant, the 21st-century woman asserts her freedom of expression, her opinions, and her personality. Poised between the mythological nymph and the modern woman, the work pays homage to women and the Femen feminist movement.
