What a story! 🎨




 In "Marble Femen," Justine Coquidé revisits the famous Venus Italica by Antonio Canova, the 18th-century Venetian master renowned for his mastery of marble and his ability to sublimate the softness of the female nude. Canova, meticulous in his attention to detail, even went so far as to apply a thin layer of pink wax to his sculptures to give them a more lifelike appearance. This technical refinement served an aesthetic of controlled sensuality, where femininity was idealized, often silent, and offered to the male gaze.


 "Marble Femen" offers a counter-narrative. The frozen Venus of the past becomes a 21st-century woman, still majestic, but now engaged. Inspired by the Femen feminist movement, this new Venus uses her body as a manifesto. On her arm, a simple and powerful phrase: "I am free."


 Crowned with flowers—a symbol of peace, strength, and poetic rebellion—she gazes straight ahead, defiant and determined. She is no longer merely an object of contemplation: she speaks, she asserts herself, she demands. This work pays homage to women's struggles, to emancipation, and to the power of the female gaze reclaimed.
