What a story! 🎨
The Grand Odalisque was painted by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres in 1814. An odalisque means
"Harem woman." An odalisque was often a chambermaid, a slave, who could become one of the sultan's wives. Painters of the time depicted scenes brought back from their travels in the Orient. Ingres, however, used only his imagination to paint his odalisque. He had, in fact, never left France. Her unusually long back is an anatomical error by the painter, but it is also what made the painting famous! The Odalisque breaks free... rediscover her in a rock universe full of anachronistic details.
