What a story! 🎨

With this work on the theme of Greek mythology, created in 1801, Antonio Canova imposed his talent and mastery of marble on all of Europe.

Canova evokes a myth from Plato's Metamorphoses, that of Psyche. The daughter of a king, Psyche possesses extraordinary beauty, to the point of frightening all her suitors. The goddess of love, Aphrodite/Venus, consumed by jealousy, sent Eros/Cupid (the god of love) to plant an arrow in the young woman's heart, making her fall in love with the ugliest mortal man imaginable. Eros falls in love with the beautiful Psyche the moment he sees her and begins a love affair with her in a sumptuous palace. He makes her promise not to try to discover his identity.

But the temptation was too great, and during the night, she defied the prohibition out of curiosity and, captivated by her lover's beauty, she let a drop of burning oil fall onto the winged shoulder of the young god. Eros, dishonored, flew out the window.

In revenge, Aphrodite assigns Psyche various tasks, the last of which is to retrieve some of the beauty of Proserpine, the goddess of the Underworld, but she must not open the box containing it. Psyche manages to do so until curiosity gets the better of her; she opens the small box, but it contains only the sleep of the Underworld, and she collapses lifeless to the ground. Eros can no longer wait for his beloved to return.

Today, the image of Eros, the love of love, is tainted by consumer society. The search for love has become a fleeting quest, akin to vanity. Psyche's body is an object of desire, and this fleeting physical exchange has left indelible marks on her. Yet desire, symbolized by the two serpents, binds them together in a passionate embrace. Like a trophy, the well-known phrase "it's a match" is surrounded by thoughts forever etched in Psyche's mind. Love has become a feeling to be consumed quickly and without restraint.
