Eugène Delacroix was a French painter considered one of the leading figures of the Romantic movement. He is best known for his painting "Liberty Leading the People," which has become a symbol of democracy. During his career, the painter traveled to Morocco and Algeria. His visit to North Africa introduced him to the Orient. He left behind numerous sketchbooks and preparatory drawings. There, he discovered exotic animals such as the Royal Tiger, which is depicted here in a new light. Upon returning to France, the Orient profoundly influenced him, and he painted one of his most famous canvases, "Women of Algiers in their Apartment."
