What a story! 🎨
An undisputed masterpiece of antiquity, it now stands proudly at the entrance to the first staircase of the Louvre Museum, yet the artist and the circumstances of its creation remain unknown. The statue represents the winged goddess of Victory (Nike in Greek), who inspired the name of the famous sportswear brand Nike. The Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, a French diplomat and archaeologist, during archaeological excavations he conducted on the island of Samothrace. The drapery work and the technique are incredible: "A true muslin of marble, glued by the wind onto living flesh." A true symbol of "Victory," she remains proudly positioned like a warrior traversing the ages. The statue was found without its head, and the artist Justine Coquidé then imagined a delicate, unidentified face that perpetuates the mystery of the statue. Fascinated by the sculpted work of drapery, she decided to approach it with a different technique than collage, that of drawing.
