What a story! 🎨
The Venus Victrix is a sculpture by Antonio Canova, nicknamed the Borghese Venus because Princess Pauline Bonaparte Borghese served as the model for the statue. It is on display at the Borghese Gallery in Rome.
Canova initially envisioned Pauline Borghese as Diana, the chaste goddess. But the princess, renowned for her beauty, chose to embody Venus, the goddess of love, depicted unclothed.
The statue quickly became known and admired. Its beauty is enhanced by the fact that it holds an apple in its left hand. This detail alludes to a passage from Greek mythology. This fruit was meant to determine which of Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena was the most beautiful of the goddesses.
It was the mortal Paris who had been chosen as arbiter to settle the dispute. He gave Aphrodite this fruit, which soon became known as the "apple of discord" because of the jealousy it aroused in the other goddesses. The older Pauline could no longer bear the sight of the statue and forbade the public from seeing it. Vain, she did not want to be compared to her former beauty or for anyone to notice the marks of time.
Between collage and drawing, Justine Coquidé accompanies this work with a poem by Ronsard.
A poem written from memory by her maternal grandmother. Today, time still flows by near Pauline. Flowers wither and birds dance around her like fleeting memories fading away. This new version of Venus Victrix reminds us of the beauty of the ephemeral, teaching us to embrace the present moment. For time is silent, and each passing moment lives only through memories.
